UFC Rankings

The UFC rankings are the cause of much debate. While it is difficult to implement a successful system in a sport which is not defined by seasons, we feel the UFC rankings are trying to be “too exact” with the process.

We have all seen it: Dan Henderson, not even ranked in the top 10, fights Michael Bisping for the UFC middleweight championship (not a late replacement either), or how about #6 ranked fighter beats #4 ranked fighter, but they are still ranked underneath?

The NEW Sweet Science Tiered Ranking System

A system based on groupings, rather than specific, individual positions.

The fighter holding the belt

Fans would not lose their shit if these fighters received a title fight next.

If fighter loses in title fight, he/she is placed directly into in-the-mix. You should not automatically be ranked #2 when you lose a title fight and we tend to dislike immediate rematches.

The fighter is two or more wins away from a championship fight

The fighter never quite became a contender. Name recognition, popularity, or past accomplishments could result in a fast-tracked title shot at some point.

The fighter is 3 to 4 fights away from a title shot

The fighter is older, not an up-and-comer, or they’re a long shot to ever fight for the title. The fighter needs to have been in the upper echelon of the division at some point.

*Relevant tier in the process of being developed.

No season-less, ranking system will be perfect, but we are passionate fans, such as yourself, and we demand an evolution within the rankings system, such as the techniques within the sport. Like most combat-sport rankings, our’s has its paradoxes, too. This is new for us. We are going to work out the kinks and build upon it. If you have any recommendations, please message us via email, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or use the comments at the bottom.
